Strider loosened his grip on his bow as he watched Tevin return to his blanket with Greer. He would’ve shot the knight had he attempted to ride off with the horses. He almost shot him when he raised a hand to strike Greer. But to the knight’s credit, he didn’t follow through with his threat, instead opting to shove Greer aside rather than hurt him.

But the di’horvith didn’t move, and Strider had the sense that Greer had won a battle without dealing a single blow as he led Tevin back to his bed. They were now both asleep, cuddled close, and snoring softly. Strider silently got to his feet. He moved beyond the dying fire, melting into the shadows, like a spirit from the abyss.

Selecting a place where he could watch the camp without being seen, he settled in. His soul was exhausted, and it still hadn’t recovered from the damage he’d done to it when he saved Greer’s life. The cold never truly left him now. It ate at his soul and made his limbs feel slow and heavy.

The ice had spread within him with new strength, its frigid claws encircling his soul, threatening to drag him down as it always did. It whispered sweet words of oblivion and rest. The fire popped and sizzled, casting sparks into the air, but Strider was beyond its warmth.

The Hunter’s eyes closed, his breathing growing shallow. He was being drawn deeper into the cold, the blackness. It would give him rest, it would give him peace, and he would see his loved ones again. But something kept him from leaving.

He looked down at his wrist to see a silver thread wrapped firmly around it, intertwined with a new thread. One of fiery orange. Both shook with the strain of keeping him from slipping closer to death. He looked back toward the fire’s dying light to see Addy and Greer’s sleeping forms.

He’d made a promise to return her home. He was many things, but he didn’t break his word when he gave it. His gaze returned to the darkness one last time before moving back toward the image of Addy and Greer. Strider took a deep breath as he opened his eyes. He’d slumped against a tree whose shadow he’d sought shelter under. All was still, filled with the sound of the fire, accompanied by the forest’s night songs. Strider rubbed a hand down his face as he tried to fend off the coldness that still lingered within him.

As he did so, he felt eyes on him. Looking back to camp, he met the gaze of Greer. The di’horvith was watching him from where he lay beside Tevin. His intense expression slowly softened as he seemed to see something that assured him. He thumped his tail once before laying back down and going to sleep. Strider was struck for the hundredth time by how the wolf made him feel as if he were seeing into his soul.

His gaze shifted to the prisoner, who’d begun to stir.
